Welcome Back, Everyone!
What an interesting experience we had last week. Even though it was trying at times, I’m sure we all have stories of neighbors we met for the first time, houses full of friends and family, and interesting cooking experiences. For me it was scones on the grill; they were the best. These times help us to realize how lucky we are and how much we take for granted in our daily lives. It took me at least 3 to 4 days not to reach for a switch as I entered a room.
Our trusty Administrative Coordinator, Melinda Smith, saved the day for us. Each morning, she spent many hours waiting in line at her local town hall to use the computers for her allotted 20 minutes in order to keep you up-to-date on our status. Petrina Lewis spent hours taping alert messages. Mary McHale, our Director of Admissions, made several forays to check out the school braving downed wires and fallen trees. (She and her husband also did the nasty job of cleaning out all the school refrigerators.)
I can tell that each of you made an adventure of all of this for your children. They seemed to have great stories to tell and enjoyed the different ways of roughing it. (And I heard many cooking stories.) Some families used the storm’s aftermath as a history lesson, bringing their children back to times before electricity and running water. These events provide an opportunity to help your child learn to deal with the unexpected, to problem solve, roll with the punches, be creative, and do it with good humor. Of course, this is ultimately dependent on your response and approach as the adult, because that is what determines your child’s experience as well as his or her memories of the event.
Again, welcome back—and congratulations on surviving, in style, the storm of 2011.
