Una’s Chat
Dear Families,
The following poem is one of Shel Silverstein’s wonderful commentaries on life. It caught my eye because it so captures what I feel parenting is all about: modeling.
“Don’t Tell Me”
Please don’t tell me I should hug,
Don’t tell me I should care.
Don’t tell me just how grand I’d feel
If I just learned to share.
Don’t say, “It’s all right to cry,”
“Be Kind,” “Be fair,” Be true.”
Just let me see YOU do it,
Then I just might do it too.
Our children are designed, as Dr. Montessori put it, “to be acculturated to their time and place,” and parents are the blueprint that they follow to accomplish this. This is particularly true of the early years when children become what they experience. Your young child experiences life through your lens. Your response becomes his or her response, so if you consistently model a positive approach to life, problems and obstacles so will your child.
Go to it, have fun and a great weekend.
Una
